STEM Lego challenge cards, some Christmas themed. SEN/KS1

(1)
Lego challenge cards, symbol supported for non / early readers. Some are Christmas themed as I’ve just made them to try and keep my children busy during this last week. Children choose or are given a card which gives an instruction - e.g. build a Christmas tree / first letter of your name and use Lego to build as instructed. It’s a fairly open ended activity but my hope is to provide more structure and purpose to play for my children with autism as some have very short attention spans and flit from activity to activity without any meaningful engagement. 24 cards in all, best printed onto card or laminated so they last.

All About Me Game, transition, new class

A game I made for my small class of learners with autism. Suitable for any small group introduction - e.g. intervention group, speech and language, attention and listening. Learners throw a dice and move around the board. When they land on a question, they answer the question. I like to ask another member of the group a question relating to the answer, to encourage learners to pay attention to each other's answers - my children tend to have very little interest in each other! Supports social skills, attention and listening, turn taking. Used for specialist autism group but appropriate for any mainstream KS1 / KS2 group or older SEN group.

Summer Holiday visual task, SEND

A sheet for learners to state what they have done on their summer holidays. They could either write or use the images provided. 1 main sheet and 2 sheets of images with ideas. I have tried to make it inclusive and mindful that not everyone jets off abroad or has days out so have included things like McDonalds, walks, mobile phone, family pets, park.

Queen Victoria PowerPoint and accompanying activity and worksheet. SEN, autism

Editable PowerPoint about Queen Victoria's life and homes. Designed for a Year 7 class of students with autism, therefore highly structured. Included: PowerPoint presentation Activity to accompany the lesson is included, pupils are asked to use the internet to find out the date of given events in Victoria's life time, to write these on cards and then sort cards into chronological order. Worksheet for pupils to match a picture of Victoria's various homes to the correct name. 'MindMap' style worksheet - pupils to use information gained from the lesson to complete facts about Queen Victoria. As mentioned, this was designed for children with autism / SEN but is also suitable for mainstream students.

2 basic maths activities, matching (1-5) and completing 10 squares (1 - 20) EYFS/KS1/SEN

Activity 1: Children need to count the items (1 - 5) on a baseboard and place the corresponding number digit card and dice card appropriately. Designed to reinforce familiarity with numbers 1 to 5 and their matching digit and dice face. Best laminated with velcro to attach cards to baseboard but also suitable for use as a cut and paste worksheet. Activity 2: 4 worksheets of varying difficulty. Children need to complete 10 squares to make specific numbers. This could be made more fun by using bingo dabbers or an ear bud dipped in paint.

3D Hot Air Balloon craft - All About Me, Transition, New Class, SEN, KS1, KS2

4 oval shapes for learners to draw - self portrait, things I like, my family, what I want to do when I grow up. When these are finished, ovals should be cut out and folded in half. Two halves should be stuck to one oval - making a 'cross' type shape when viewed from above. Apologies for my rubbish description! String can then be used to attach the 'basket' to the hot air balloon. A lovely 'getting to know you' craft for the beginning of the school year. These look nice strung in a line across a window.

ASD / SEN All About Me Factfile, new class, transition, get to know you activity

This is a 2 page fact sheet designed for my class who were a mixed age primary group, all with autism, attending a specialist provision. This group were working between P6 and approximately a Y1 level. The activity was designed to increase learner’s awareness of basic facts relating to themselves as few of the class were aware of basic personal information such as their full name, birthday and address. As the activity was geared around them, they were more engaged than usual and most were able to remember the key facts after practising asking and answering each other. I also linked this to our maths - taking about how many of each eye colour / shoe size etc and measuring heights, hands and feet. I will upload that separately. Activities suitable for any age group working at this level. Eye is to be coloured in with appropriate colour - in case anyone is wondering why there is nowhere to write the eye colour!

Basic Maths: One more, one less activities, KS1, Autism, SEN

4 resources I’ve used with my class of children with autism to develop understanding of 1 more / 1 less. Suitable for mainstream children and learners with SEN. I have kept these sheets very simple and visual for my learners. 3 worksheets and set of peg cards which I use as a TEACCH workstation task (box job). Learners identify the correct answer by placing a peg on the card.

Victorians - Queen Victoria's Life. Structured PowerPoint and accompanying worksheet. SEN, ASD

This is a PowerPoint used to teach students about Queen Victoria as part of a Humanities topic. As students all had autism, it is highly structured to ensure pupils were aware of what the lesson involved and what they needed to do. This reduced anxiety for several very anxious pupils. Independent working is stressed as this was a development point for the group in question. Taught to Year 7 pupils with social communication difficulties, including autism, as a general'Humanities' lesson. Speaking, listening, classroom and social skills were prioritised. Also suitable for older / younger students. PowerPoint is editable.

4 times table, designed to coordinate with white rose Y3

3 and 4 times table peg cards. Chop and laminate. Children use clothes pegs, clipping the peg on the correct answer. Domino groups of 4 - my children will stick in book then write which 4 x table sum matches the group. x 2 and x 4 function machine - my children struggle to understand that multiplying by 4 is the same as doubling twice. Designed for SEN / autism mixed age class but equally appropriate for mainstream / SEN.

Can I afford it? Up to £1. Basic money sense / life skills peg cards. ASD/SEN

(0)
Cards show British coins up to £1 in value, stating “I have…” Underneath is a statement saying how much an item costs. Learners need to count the coins and decide whether they can afford the item. Many learners with ASD / SEN struggle with money sense and the idea of whether an item is affordable or not. This activity could be extended to ask how much change the student would receive if the item is affordable, or alternatively, how much more money they would need. Designed as an independent workstation task for learners with autism but could also be used in a small group. Learners use clothes pegs to answer the question yes / no to make the task more interactive and to focus those who find sitting and writing to be difficult.
